“The Orphans of the Creek” – Back Cover Copy

A few weeks ago I posted about writing great cover copy. Now I’d like to share with you the back cover copy for my upcoming novel, The Orphans of the Creek, so you can not only see my points in action, but also get excited about the book itself!

“Whiteboy is Scanlon Creek’s top disc jockey and a rising star in its drug-dealing underworld. He and his best friend, Joey, are ready to make a killing with a new designer drug that’s sure to take the Creek’s nightclub scene to new heights. He’s handsome, drives a convertible, and is ready to start a family with Juniper, his beautiful girlfriend.

But it all starts to crumble when Whiteboy’s father, absent twenty years since he ran off to follow a mysterious preacher known only as ‘John Doe’, contacts Whiteboy and entices him into a final visit. In a mysterious castle in northern Ontario, Whiteboy bids his father farewell and scatters his ashes, only to find that the ashes don’t want to be scattered. They want to stay. They want to live.

Since then, nothing has been the same for Whiteboy and a violent cloud seems to be gathering over Scanlon Creek. Suddenly, the Creek’s seedy side—along with decades of shameful secrets—are boiling out of the shadows. And everything those shadows touch, they cling to. Forever.”

The cover image, story excerpts, and publishing date soon to follow!

Think all editors are the same? That’s like believing all writers are the same when they’re clearly not.

So for all you authors who are looking to hire a freelance editor but unsure of how to choose the right one, my column in the July edition of the Writers and Editors Network newsletter is called “Shopping for an Editor?” Hope you find the information useful.

What Makes Great Cover Copy?

How many times have you been drawn in by a book’s front cover, only to pick it up and be disappointed by the back cover copy?

Your own novel could be the Best Thing Ever Written but, with less-than-enticing copy, it might find a permanent home on that retail shelf. Until, of course, it’s time to send returns to the publisher.

Back cover copy is vital to your book’s success.  Think of it as a written trailer for your book. In fact, you should be able to read it aloud in a movie announcer’s voice without a hint of sarcasm!

Still not sure how to go about it? Don’t despair! You can create great cover copy by following a few simple guidelines, as follows:

1) 250 words, max

2) Describe the main character and establish their story arc

3) Hint at the climax in “cliff-hanger” fashion

Your copy might become bogged down if you describe too many sub-plots or mention more than one secondary character. You want to whet the reader’s appetite, not overwhelm them with details!

If you feel too involved with the story to write objective copy, ask an editor for guidance. Great copy on your novel is worth the investment.
